Dana Vollmer outshines in Women’s 100m freestyle heats: Day five – US Swimming Olympic Trials
Three-time world champion, Dana Vollmer outshined in the qualifying rounds of Women’s 100m freestyle on day five of the 2012 US Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha on Friday, June 29.
The session included preliminary rounds of the Women’s 100m freestyle and Men’s 200m backstroke while the top two finishers of each event at these trials will have the opportunity to represent USA at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The opening event of the session was Women’s 100m freestyle, where Vollmer wasted no time and stifled hopes of her opponents by snaring top qualifying position.
With her stupendous efforts, she out-touched her closest challenger over the finishing end for first position and entered the semi-finals with an effort of 54.35 seconds.
Her astonishing effort remained 0.14 seconds ahead of Allison Schmitt of NBACMD, who occupied gold medal of the 200m freestyle on fourth day of the championship.
Schmitt remained just an inch slower from her former finisher and posted a time of 54.49 seconds for second position.
Similarly, she was followed by Jessica Hardy of TROJCA, who was only 0.03 seconds away from her foregoing finisher and posted a time of 54.52 seconds for third finest qualifying position.
Fourth best place in the qualifying rounds was secured by Margo Geer of ZONAAZ, who stayed 0.10 seconds behind and posted a time of 54.62 seconds.
Geer was trailed by Amanda Weir of SA-GA, who stayed just an inch apart and emerged on the finishing blockade as fifth fastest swimmer with the timing of 54.65 seconds.
Sixth qualifying position of the discipline was secured by Lia Neal of AGUAMR, who stayed 0.12 seconds apart and posted a time of 54.77 seconds.
Next were the preliminary rounds of Men’s 200m backstroke, where Ryan Lochte of DBS-FL clocked a top ranked time of 1 minute and 57.24 seconds to qualify for the semi-finals.
With his astounding effort, Lochte remained 0.69 seconds faster from Tyler Clary of FASTCA, who secured second best place by producing an effort of 1 minute and 57.93 seconds.
Clary was followed by Matt Grevers of FORDZA, who accomplished third position in the first round of the event by hitting the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 58.90 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Ryan Murphy of BSS-FL, who remained 0.13 seconds behind and tapped the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 59.03 seconds.
Murphy was chased by Nick Thoman of MAC-NC, who occupied fifth position of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 59.24 seconds.
Furthermore, Lochte, who improved the record of 200m Individual Medley (IM) at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, was hopeful of his dominance in the subsequent rounds of the backstroke discipline.
