Dana Vollmer secures Women’s 100m butterfly crown: Day two – 2011 FINA World Championships
Dana Vollmer of USA clinched the title of Women’s 100m butterfly on the second day of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 World Long Course Championships, taking place in Shanghai, China, on Monday, July 25.
After qualifying as the fastest swimmer into the semi-final, Vollmer won the hearts of arena by overwhelming the effort of defending champion, Sarah Sjoestroem of Sweden. The American swimmer won the title of the event in a notable time of 56.87 seconds.
With her gold winning effort, she missed Sjoestroem’s world record of 56.06 seconds with a difference of only 0.81 seconds.
Sjoestroem was followed by Australian swimmer, Alicia Coutts, who stayed only 0.07 seconds away and won the silver medal, by posting remarkable time of 56.94 seconds. Ying Lu of China was 0.12 seconds behind Coutts and pocketed the bronze medal of the event,
by clocking a time of 57.06 seconds.
Sjoestroem, who made the championship and world record of 100m butterfly by winning the gold medal in a record time at 2009 Rome World Championships, failed to defend her title and finished her swim in the fourth fastest place. She was followed by Ellen
Gandy of Great Britain, who concluded her two-lap swim in a fifth fastest time of 57.55 seconds. Lu’s team-member, Zige Liu was named as the sixth best swimmer of the event, as she stayed 0.02 seconds behind Gandy and produced a time of 57.57 seconds.
Jessicah Schipper of Australia was the seventh position holder of the event, as she sprinted her way to the finishing wall in a time of 57.95 seconds. Gandy’s team-member, Jemma Lowe emerged as the eighth fastest finisher of the butterfly event, as she remained
0.01 seconds behind Schipper and touched the finishing wall in a time of 57.96 seconds.
Vollmer expressed happiness after winning the 100m butterfly title of the event. In addition, the arena enjoyed the gruelling efforts of all participants, while the winners received medals and accolades for their unstoppable efforts after the conclusion
of the session.
