Dana Vollmer wins Women’s 100m freestyle gold: Day one - Santa Clara International Grand Prix
Dana W Vollmer of California Aquatics won gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle on day one of the 2012 Santa Clara International Grand Prix in California on Friday, June 1.
Santa Clara is last of the seven-stop 2012 USA Swimming Grand Prix series, providing a chance to the international players to compete each other in their respective events before the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 24-year-old Vollmer stifled hopes of her opponents by occupying gold medal of the double lap discipline in a scintillating fashion.
With her alluring efforts and commendable start, she managed to gain slight edge over her opponents and cruised her way towards the finishing blockade with the timing of 54.38 seconds.
The champion was trailed by her teammate, Natalie A Coughlin, who stayed 0.39 seconds apart and touched the finishing end for silver medal with the timing of 54.77 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Madison J Kennedy of SwimMAC Carolina, who remained nearly half body length behind and tapped the finishing wall for bronze medal with the timing of 55.39 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Hannah Wilson of Hong Kong, who stayed nearly 0.40 seconds apart and hit the finishing end with the timing of 55.73 seconds.
Wilson was chased by Brittany Elmslie of Queensland, Australia, who remained nearly full body length behind and sprinted her way towards the finishing blockade with the timing of 54.89 seconds for fifth position.
The 17-year-old Elmslie was followed by her team-member, Emily Seebohm, who obtained sixth position of the discipline by producing an effort of 55.33 seconds.
Seventh spot of the race was secured by Julia Wilkinson of Canada, who remained only 0.05 seconds away and posted a time of 55.38 seconds.
Wilkinson was obtained by Yayoi Matsumoto of Japan, who was only one stroke slower and finished eighth in the 100m event by submitting a time of 55.57 seconds.
Furthermore, the position holders received a huge of applause from the audience for their gruelling efforts while medals were distributed among winners at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
