Dana White: Frankie Edgar must move down the division and take on Jose Aldo – UFC news
Dana White, President Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), finally broke his silence regarding Frankie Edgar saying he personally respects the former UFC lightweight champion and wants him to brawl Jose Aldo at featherweight adding that he will strive hard
to convince UFC’s underdog to move down the division.
Frankie Edgar was bound to defend his 155-pound lightweight title against Ben Henderson and constituted the main event of UFC 144. The five-round bout witnessed Ben emerging out of the ring as the new champion and Edgar bloodied and brutally beaten up with
a swollen bulging left eye.
Since the defeat Edgar is vigorously in pursuit of a rematch against Ben but the critics, his fans and even Dana are unanimous that he must move down to the featherweight division where he genuinely belongs.
Dana commented that he denoted Frankie as the greatest underdog because of his great resilience, iron will and above all winning ability. It must be kept in mind that Edgar, widely known as ‘The Answer’, started his UFC career as a featherweight but due
to his determination and eagerness to take on big guns, he moved up the division.
Since his transition to the lightweight division the 30-year-old brawler has nailed many big names and his career’s greatest accomplishment involves nailing B.J. Penn twice in a row. Dana expressed his views and said, “Here's the thing: I really care about
this kid. I like him a lot. There's only so many wars you can have in your career, and I hate – hate, hate, hate – guys fighting out of their weight class.”
UFC executive further added, “He did it because he had to do it because there was no other weight class, and you can't deny a guy a way to make a living. But I would love to see him at 145. I can't tell him where to go, but I can heavily persuade him.”
Dana seconded his argument about Frankie’s cut to 145-pound featherweight division by saying that lightweight division currently includes brawlers who have cut from 170-pound division and are basically huge men when compared to Edgar.
White said that it is a norm to cut and fall in a lower division and fight brawls adding that if Frankie decides to do so he will give him a direct title shot at Jose Aldo who is also a talented, pound-for-pound brawler.
Frankie has recently in an interview revealed that he will stay in the division and will opt to take on Ben in a rematch with title on the line. In UFC 144 Edgar lost the bout and the title to Ben Henderson by collecting 49–46, 48–47, and 49–46 scores.
