Dana White: I would like Forrest to retire – UFC News
UFC President Dana White wants Forrest Griffin and Matt Hughes to retire. White, who usually finds it difficult to tell his fighters to retire, is blunt this time.
“Hughes is one of these guys that, I absolutely, positively want Matt Hughes to retire,” said White in a news conference yesterday, Thursday.
“What else is there to accomplish? The guy's done everything. He's been a staple in this organization for a long time. He's been (freaking) awesome. There's nothing left to prove,” he added.
According to White, Hughes has achieved everything a fighter can in the sport and there is no reason for him to stay anymore. White believes it is better to burn off than to fade away, and probably that is the reason why he is asking Griffin and Hughes to
retire.
“It's so hard for these guys to say 'I'm retired.' It's so hard. The same thing with Chuck, I'm going through it with Matt.”
White then came to Griffin, speaking the same sweet words he used for Hughes.
“I would like Forrest to retire. There's nothing left for Forrest to prove, either. He won 'The Ultimate Fighter,' he's had an amazing career, he won the title when everyone thought he couldn't, he's made (expletive) loads of money, he's got a beautiful
wife, he's got a baby,” said White.
White claims he understands what a fighter goes through when he is told to be retired. According to the President of UFC, it is difficult for fighters like Hughes and Griffin to hang up their gloves, since they have been fighting for nearly their whole lives.
White revealed when he spoke to Griffin about it, the mixed martial artist did not want to hear it. However, White insists, he tried his best to convince Griffin.
For now, it seems like Dana White has made his intentions clear. Even Hughes and Griffin stay in the business, they will not have big fights to go for. Probably, this is the reason why White wants to walk away, instead of being beaten by fighters who are
way younger to them.
A decision from both the fighters is still pending.
