Dana White believes there are enough contenders at 205lbs – UFC News
Dana White has received enough criticism for his decision of letting the best fighter of UFC on Fox 4 fight UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. However, the boss believes he is on the right track and that the 205lbs division has enough fighters to
upset the champion.
UFC on Fox 4 will be headlined by a much anticipated showdown between Mauricio ‘Shogun Rua and Brandon Vera. Rua currently stands with 20 wins and 6 losses in MMA, and 4 wins and 4 losses in UFC. On the other hand, Brandon stands with 12 wins and 5 losses
in MMA, and 8 wins and 5 losses in UFC. Considering the fact that both fighters are of the calibre, the showdown is expected to electrify the arena.
White spoke about Rua’s decision of not fighting newbie Glover Teixeira, who comes with 18 wins and 2 losses in MMA and 1 win and 0 losses in UFC.
Teixeira is now scheduled to meet Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson at UFC 153 in October.
“I'm sure no one's going to be happy about (fighting Teixeira). We'll see how it goes with Rampage. (It's an) interesting fight – both have really good chins and both hit hard,” said White in a news conference for UFC on Fox 4 in Los Angeles.
“People are going to have to fight him. You can use the excuse, 'Listen, nobody knows who he is,' this and that. If he beats Rampage, it's going to be tough to say that,” he added.
Although new, Teixeira has proven himself a good artist in his debut fight against Kyle Kingsbury. Teixeira won with first-round submission to Kyle, boosting his credibility within the industry.
For some reason, Rua found it offensive to fight Teixeira. According to White, Rua told him he would rather be cut from the sport than fight Teixeira.
Rua is currently eyeing a title shot at UFC light heavyweight titlist Jon Jones. Probably, this was the reason as to why he shrugged off the possibility of fighting against Teixeira.
Nevertheless, White believes even a new fighter can be good enough to beat a legend.
“'Shogun' Rua had a 'Fight of the Year' last year against Dan Henderson, who is now fighting 'Bones' Jones for the title,” said White.
