Dana White cancels UFC 151 once and for all – UFC News
After a couple of mishaps, President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White decided to put a halt to UFC 151, which was to take place September 1 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
The first blow to the event was an injury to Dan Henderson, light heavyweight contender, who was scheduled to take on light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for the title. Due to the injury, Henderson was forced to walk out of the show.
“This is probably one of my all-time lows as being president of UFC,” said White, who for the first time in his career cancelled a major UFC card.
“Dan Henderson has a partial tear in his MCL and couldn't continue. He tried to train, he continued to work out and saw a doctor, but there was nothing we could do to save that fight,” White added.
Immediately, Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen grabbed the opportunity when asked by White if he wants to face Jones at UFC 151. However, to White’s dismay, Jon Jones turned down the proposal saying he will not fight Sonnen at the eleventh hour.
“This is probably one of my all-time lows as being president of UFC,” said White.
“Chael Sonnen accepted the fight with Jon Jones, so as of 8 o'clock last night we had a fight. But the one thing I thought wouldn't happen, happened. Jon Jones said, 'I'm not fighting Chael Sonnen with eight days' notice.”
For now, White feels embarrassed and disgusted over the card’s cancelation and Jon Jones’ excuse. White was hoping the champion would save his collar but it did not happen. This is the first time White does not have an option of saving the day. The best
he can do right now is to let go off UFC 151.
Jon Jones is scheduled to face Lyoto Machida on September 22 at UFC 152. In other words, UFC 151 will just not happen. Fans will directly jump to UFC 152 after 151’s cancellation.
Officially, White has called of the show and so there is no way fans could hope that it might happen.
