Dana White defends his decision of deciding an opponent for Jon Jones – UFC News
Rarely there are times when you see UFC President Dana White playing on the back-foot. Unfortunately, White is in need of defending himself right now for his decision of setting the winner of UFC on Fox 4 main event as Jon Jones’ opponent.
In a media conference past Monday, Dana White announced that the winner of UFC on Fox 4 will be Jon Jones’ next opponent for the title. The main event will be held between Mauricio Rua and Brandon Vera. The decision was widely criticised by analysts, as
both the fighters have already lost to Jones before.
Jon Jones is currently scheduled to face Dan Henderson at UFC 151 on September 1. Winner of the bout, and of course the light heavyweight champion, will face winner of Mauricio vs. Brandon.
When questions were raised on White’s decision, he answered saying, “You know what brother, it’s all about opportunities. Brandon is a guy who burst on the scene, was going to be a 205 pound champion, a heavyweight champion, was running through guys left
and right. And then, I don’t know what happened, but it’s all about opportunities. He accepted the opportunity to fight one of the greatest fighters of this decade and we’ll see what he does with it.”
On the other hand, Brandon Vera, who is excited upon getting the opportunity to face the light heavyweight champion, said, “This is almost like winning the lottery twice. It feels like all the ups and downs I’ve been through in my career, all the things
that have happened in life, it feels like it’s all been okay so far. This opportunity makes all the good, all the bad and all the ugly that has happened so far throughout my career, throughout life, okay.”
As awkward as it sounds, White is actually serious about putting Jones once again in front of fighters who are not of his calibre. Rua is an excellent mixed martial artist, but he fell to Jones in just 3 minutes. His performance was criticised by fans worldwide
and so another shot for him is unjust.
