Dana White on Chael Sonnen vs. Forrest Griffin – UFC News
UFC mixed martial artist Chael Sonnen is still hoping to get a title shot but this time against Jon Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion. After losing twice to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen wants to take on Jon Jones.
As always, Sonnen is trying to get to Jones through bitter spats. Surprisingly, unlike Silva, Jones claims he will not fall into Sonnen’s trap. The duo has been a war of words recently, which started when Sonnen called Jones a ‘punk’ on UFC night.
Sonnen will make his comeback to the light heavyweight division this fall against Forrest Griffin and he is hoping to earn a title shot once he beats the American.
President of UFC Dana White believes Sonnen may get a title shot if he is able to defeat Griffin.
“Chael wants to fight at 205. He felt he had his run at 185 and now he wants to make a run at the title at 205,” said White in an interview with Cagewriter.
“If he can beat Forrest, he'd be on his way [toward title contention. Forrest has some good wins and he's an ex-light heavyweight champion. He has awesome credentials. Forrest is a big guy, a real big guy, and that will be a big test for Chael,” White added.
On the other hand, Sonnen revealed that he could go up to the division and beat the ‘punk’ Jon Jones. Sonnen’s statement did not really sit well with Jones and the champion came out lashing at the American Gangster on Twitter.
Jones claimed that Sonnen could not defeat Silva and so he will not be able to defeat him as well. Moreover, Jones made it clear that Sonnen will not get to him through trash-talking. The champion reminded Sonnen that a title shot is only possible if the
latter is able to make his way to it.
For now, Sonnen is hopeful of beating Griffin and getting his hands on the champion. However, considering the situation, it is not easy for Sonnen to defeat a contender like Griffin, who is already among the best fighters of the division.
