Dana White regards Chris Weidman as the number one contender for Silva – UFC News
Dana White is impressed with Chris Weidman’s combating skills, especially after the American fighter defeated Mark Munoz.
However, White asserted that Silva will not be fighting until 2013. Therefore, according to White, even if Chris Weidman gets a shot, it will be somewhere around next year.
“I haven’t talked to Silva. He won’t fight again this year,” said White to MMA media.
White was asked if Weidman is the number one contender, as the latter believes it, White revealed, “He won’t fight again this year.”
White even said that if not Weidman, then welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will be next for Silva to fight.
“We’ll see what happens with GSP in November. Then we’ll see what is next for Silva.”
It should be noted here that Weidman has been pushing White for a fight against Silva. In his last interview, Weidman came up saying he is the only fighter who can defeat Silva. According to him, he is a ‘stylistic nightmare’ for Silva and that is the reason
why Silva’s camp is avoiding him.
On the other hand, Briton fighter Michael Bisping is in the queue too. Bisping, who was defeated by American fighter Chael Sonnen last year, believes he has what it takes to take down Silva. According to Bisping, Sonnen is a great fighter but he lacks the
grappling techniques that would have helped him in beating Silva.
Last month, in an interview, Bisping revealed that he has been promised by UFC officials that he would get a title shot against Silva if he is able to beat Brian Stann at UFC 152.
Unfortunately, Stann, Bisping and Weidman might find it hurtful to know that Anderson Silva is not planning on taking a fight until 2013. Even if he does, he is most probably looking forward to fighting Georges St-Pierre.
According to Silva’s camp, Bisping, Weidman and Stann are all young fighters and Silva is no longer in the mood of facing them after his easy victory over Chael Sonnen. However, White believes that Weidman has proved his mettle and soon the American MMA
fighter will get his shot.
