Dana White reveals Jones’ injury led to Sonnen fight – UFC News
President of the Ultimate Fighting Championship Dana White has asserted that light heavyweight champion Jon Jones’ arm injury led the organisation to schedule the Sonnen fight. According to White, since Jones would be out for a few months, it made sense
to put Sonnen against him next.
“This wasn't where I was going. But when this happened and Jones was going to be out for so long, it made sense,” said White in an interview with Yahoo! Sports regarding Jones’ next encounter against The American Gangster at The Ultimate Fighter season 17.
According to White, they had initially planned to put Jones next against Dan Henderson, who is the number one contender for the title. However, due to the injury that Jones suffered against Vitor Belfort at UFC 152, their plans changed.
It should be noted here that the UFC’s decision of putting Chael Sonnen against Jones has received a lot of criticism from fighters and analysts. White, who has previously defended the decision saying no other fighter wanted to take on Jones, once again
asserted that fans want to see the fight which is the main reason as to why it is happening.
“I understand completely [about Sonnen not having won a fight at light heavyweight], but it's a fight people want to see,” he added.
For most fighters, Chael Sonnen is nothing more than just a person who makes his into fights by trash-talking. Sonnen did the same at the middleweight level against champion Anderson Silva and now he did it for Jones. Sonnen verbally assaulted Jones to the
level where he accepted a fight against him.
Sonnen and Jones will be coaching teams against each other at The Ultimate Fighter season 17. According to White, the cast has already garnered enough attention from fans.
Unfortunately, not many are quite satisfied with Dana White’s explanations, including the likes of middleweight champion Anderson Silva, light heavyweight contender Lyoto Machida and number one contender Dan Henderson. According to all of them, Sonnen did
not deserve the title show and there is no justification for putting him against Jones in a title match.
