Hello,

Im doing an assesment on dance auditions. Does anyone know what judges are looking for and what is some of the criteria for a auditionee. Maybe a little information on all the stuff they need like dance shoes or special dance clothes.

Thank you

  1. it depends on the dance style. I know 2 inch heels are good to have for auditions. I know they look for confidence. My teachers always say at auditions, wear something bright or different and dance at the front (to stand out and be noticed i guess).

  2. It completely depends on the needs of the Company or the show. If the audition is for a hip hop street crew dancer for a music video, then a 2 inch character heel would be ridiculous.

But yes, wear something that makes a bit, a small bit, of a statement. Even if you only have 'all black'. Add  a colorful ribbon around your neck or something else that will be noticed, but not get in the way.

And again, what the judging criteria is depends on the show. If it's a ballet company, then they will be picking your technique apart with a fine toothed comb. If it's a tap audition, you be assessed for picking up rhythms and foot articulation. If it's a hip hop audition, you'll be assessed on individuality and improvisation and fluidity of movement.
