Dance Career....?

OK, so i obviously am going to become a dance teacher/choreographer/dancer when i get older. I am going to go to university and get a degree in dance, but do you think that a yoga teacher would be a good career after dance? Cause my moms friend used to be a dancer, and now she is a yoga teacher because she 65. It keeps up your strength and flexibility, so i think that it is a good idea. Cause i do not know anything else i would like to do, maybe photography? Any other careers or tips would be nice. THANKS

  1. Yes, yoga may be a good path to go down at some point in the future, but don't worry about that yet.  You have so many years now between where you are and where you're going that it's premature to make any decisions now.

As a 31 year old dancer, I don't think you necessarily need to look for a career "after" dance.  One of the great things about the dance business is that if you start young, you can do it forever.  Yes, the *way* in which you do it will change over the years, but you never have to leave the dance business.  Perhaps you'll be a dance teacher one day, or run your own dance business, or maybe even be a judge or choreographer on a dance TV show!  You never know, but there are a lot of options out there.

For now, focus on what you love, and let the future work itself out.  You're on the right track!

  2. It would seem that you have already made the important decisions; college, major, career path.

You're in pretty good shape. It is entirely too early to make any decisions about what to do at 65. You will know the answer when you get there.

Photography as an avocation (hobby) is a great idea. Think about how many opportunities you will have to photograph beautiful dancers at their craft. It's a natural!

Good luck in college. Send me an email when you get to Broadway and I'll be sure to come and watch you knock 'em dead!

  3. Many choreographers are older and still going. I would get into Pilate's over yoga. both are great for you, but pilate's is more for dancers.

  4. that seems to be the way the business goes... learn, perform, teach.  It is a natural flow as people in show buisness age, but keep your other interests close by for a full and balanced life.  you will find so much when you get to college, keep an open mind for a path to form in front of you.

    good luck!

  5. I think your better off being a Pilates instructor instead. Ex dancers are more likely to be Pilates instructors than Yoga ones.

I wouldn't plan too far ahead though because you never know what just might happen :)
