Question:

Dance and physique?

Do you think some dance styles look better when the dancer has a certain body type?

For example, ballet looks elegant and graceful with a thin ballerina but a lot of the African based dances (i.e. Caribbean dances, Reggaeton, Hip Hop, Salsa) may not look as good if the dancer is flat/skinny when a lot of the emphasis is on the hips.

Do you think in pole dancing, a certain body type looks better executing the moves on the pole? I took a pole dancing class and I felt very "voluptuous" working with the pole. It seems like a woman with a body would be better with this type of dance but I didn't feel that way about myself. I'm a size 10-12 with a lot of curves and I felt so self-conscious. It seemed like the thinner dancers were more graceful with the pole. Has anyone experienced that before?

***Or maybe it could be because it was the first time I've taken a class in this style.

  1. I do think certain body  type suit certain types of dance but It doesn't mean people who don't fit the charectoristics can't enjoy the dance too

  2. You make some good observations. Dance is about expression and each person expresses themselves more or less confidently depending on what he/she is doing. I agree with the other persons who answered your question. Don't let your body get in the way of having fun... However, there are some dances that can "feel" more right for your body and how it moves... also... I learned the hard way to never try to impress others with a sports game that I was not very good at... for example...I enjoy raquetball and I'm very good at it... however, I am a terrible tennis player. Then again.. there is a chance that you could learn ANY dance you want and ENJOY it... so my wish for you is that you will find the dance of your dreams and practice to your heart's desire!!!

  3. Hey, you're always going to feel a bit self-conscious in your first class, regardless of the style of dance. You're not at all big at a size 10-12 so I suggest keeping at the class. It will improve muscle tone as well as flexibility and you'll really feel more confident as your ability improves.

btw, I'm a very tall girl, big frame, but I do pointe in ballet. The love of dancing transcends all shapes!
