okay so i need your opinion on this one, im 15 and i want to join dance lessons for jazz, and/or modern (contemporary) ive never had any other type of dance training that requires that much flexibility other than karate but still ive never been able to do the splits but i was able to do the bridge and stuff even though i am reallyy flexible. so i was wondering am i too old for it now or will i not be able to be flexible enough to do those dances?

  1. Dance, start with the easiest steps and move after you master the esay on up to the difficult steps. I think Jazz is one of the difficult ones to start with but hey I only swing dance so what do I know?

  2. Dancing is not about age it is about skills and purfiling your dreams i wish you the best no matter what your age...

  3. No, you're not too old.  There's not really a "too old" for this kinda stuff. :)  Just stretch a lot and practice and you'll be fine.

  4. do it if its lessons they will teach you how to do the dance

  5. It often depends where you go for lessons and wether it is a competitive class or not. I danced for 9 years, at a competitive studio (I am 15 as well). Without flexibility I wouldn't have been able to perform in my class. But if you do not compete and are dedicated, you should have no trouble. Dance is so fun, and it's never to late to try something new Good luck!!!

  6. 15 is still young, of course you can still do dance.

  7. I am in the same boat you are and I am also older than you. I took KyokushinKai Karate and the Katas remind me of the Jazz dancing I am doing now (Except Jazz dancing is faster!).

Just like you, I never had any formal dance training before I took Karate.

Flexibility will help with dancing and is important but not absolutely required to perform all the dances.

Being able to perform the splits makes some dances easier to do however.

If you are dancing for recreation and not as a profession, you are never too old. It is good for your health too!

For now, just practice on stretches to make yourself more flexible.

In some dance classes, they will dedicate near half an hour for stretching. Some dance schools even have stretching classes all in their own.

  8. You should definitely start! Dance lessons are great for any ages...There are people who start at a much older age than you and still become great dancers. Jazz and modern are great styles to start out with because there are so many different types and levels. Besides, flexibility isn't everything. Some people are born flexible and some aren't. Your flexibility will improve the more you dance, but it isn't a necessity. Dance is about having fun, not how high your leaps are. Go for it!
