Question:

Dancer's advice needed!?

I hate ballet simply because it's a hour & 45 min. I find that silly. The ballet teacher isn't even a ballet specialist. She is always texting or playing with her iPod, wearing VERY loud and big jewlery, and popping gum. One time she was curling her hair in CLASS! This list continues.

She will play some Bach and tell someone to lead the class for the day... We tried talking to her, we talked to our director, we tried to persuade her to observe our class, we video taped it, and I honestly think she won't do something about it is because it's her sister.

I love this studio because I teach the little ones, I am in love with our hip-hop teacher, and I'm the assistant director in character tap.

What can I/we do to fire her?

  1. I FU CANT FIRE HER MAKE HER QUIT ACT LIKE HER DONT DO ANY WARM UPS POINT AND GIGGLE AT HER U KNOW THE USUAL MAKE HER P.I.S.S.E.D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHA

  2. show her, and gt a bunch of people to tell the owner, and see what she says, where do you go?

  3. Is this teacher even proffesional???? either you need to get all the members of your company to sign a petition to get the teacher to act more responsibly OR you could tape her again, make sure alot of teachers see it and have them sign a petition to get her fired. i am a company dancer and if you are really  serious about ballet then you should go somewhere else. You said you hated ballet so why dont you just participate in the hip-hop class, and character tap, and dont go take part in ballet if it isn't your thing.

  4. I can really empathise with you. I had the same problem at my  old "ballet" class. The teacher was pretty awful and didn't actually teach ballet. She was blatantly only there because she was the school owner's daughter. We spent most of the time playing games and choreographing our own rouines even though she hadn't taught us enough ballet to do that and we ended up doing modern dance. It's taken my current teacher a couple of years to get my turns anywhere near good and my legs approaching straight.

Anyway, that rant over, I would do what my mum would do: refuse to pay. Or, perhaps more democratically, time the amount of time she spends teaching you (not delegating to class members) and pay her for that specific amount of time. Only, get everyone, or the majority of the class, to do it. Otherwise they'll just ignore or expel you.

    Hope the situation gets better.

  5. No wonder you hate ballet. All I can say is that if you want to love it, you'll have to take ballet somewhere else - preferably from a teacher who once danced professionally. Hopefully you could still take hip-hop from this studio and do the other things.

In order to find the best training in our area in ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance, my daughter eventually moved on to different studios for each style and finally wound up skipping her senior year of high school to leave town to attend a college dance program a year early. If you're serious about dance, you go where the good teachers are and not wait until they might come to you.
