Question:

Dancers, I have to pick, adult beginners ballet or hip hop! Help, I can't decide!!!?

My main goal is to start a new hobby, do something to help me get in a little better shape, and to have fun. For now my husband thinks I should start with one class, and see if I stick with it. I am in my 20's, and am not in bad shape, just want it closer to what it used to be.

Since I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a ballerina. I am still in awe of the beauty, and grace. I love the pretty pink tutu's and tights. I love the tight, toned legs of a ballet dancer. On the other hand, hip hop is so much fun. I did pom's and cheer-leading in jr. high and high school. I know one would be more controlled movements, and one would be more cardio like.

Who has done both, which do you like better and why?

  1. I have done both and I personally like ballet better because its more fun for me, it has improved my flexibility greatly, improves my posture, makes my legs and core stronger, and i just keep improving at different skills in it and it makes me feel good : )

    you are correct, hip hop is more cardio like, and it is a very good workout. in a hip  hop class you do excersices for strength such as stomach crunches. but if you are a beginner you may have a hard time keeping up, because the choreography in hip hop is pretty complex.


  2. I did ballet since I was 3 and I did Jazz ( sort of hip hop in my dance school) and I stuck with ballet my whole life...or so far, I'm 14. I really like ballet and it works my muscles really nice. I can do a lot more and won't get tired as easy. With hip hop I would get tired and would want to stop. I love ballet and I feel like I really accomplish something. I would pick ballet.

  3. I recommend ballet, for ballet is the fundamentals of all dance. Ballet is the A,B,Cs of dance, and you have to learn the alphabet before you can read right? Although hip-hop and ballet are soo different, ballet is just a building block and in my opinion the true heart of dance. I'd go with the ballet(-=

    I have done both and found different people like them for different reasons, i for one LOVE the control and precise movements of ballet and it is my favorite and best class, i have trouble sometimes going into the unique hip-hop movements and hip-hop positions. I know a amazing dancer (teacher) who just couldn't do hip-hop, while others can't do ballet. It depends on what your comfortable with!

  4. Hip hop is more cardio like you said to burn fat. Ballet will give you long, lean muscular definition. But beginners probably won't work your muscles as much as hip hop would. If I were in your position I would choose hip hop to get in better shape. If I wanted some lean, muscular, s**y legs I would choose ballet.
