Dandy Boy and Sirius Prospect eyeing the prize in the Group 1 Darley July Cup
The Group 1 Darley July Cup has attracted a number of great runners, who will aim to land this prestigious race. Hosted at Newmarket, it will be run over a distance of six furlongs on a ground that has been labelled good to soft.
Among the line-up is the David Marnane trained Dandy Boy, who landed his biggest career victory in the Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap) at Royal Ascot, where he defeated, Waffle, by 1 ¼ lengths.
Not only was this a big victory for the six-year-old runner, it was also a great victory for the trainer. Since, he bagged this victory over a distance of six furlongs; racing at a similar distance will only benefit him.
The son of Danetime, foaled by mare Fleet Of Light, completed the distance in 1 minute and 13.87 seconds, which was quarter of a second quicker than Black Caviar's winning time in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
Trained by David Ivory, Sirius Prospect also comes to the track looking in great form and shape.
Owned by Miss N. Yarrow, the bay-brown gelding competed in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes against the Australian wonder-horse, Black Caviar. With rider Shane Kelly on his back, he did well considering he finished in seventh place as he lost the
victory only by 2 ½ lengths.
Regarding his racing strategy, the trainer commented:
"He wore a hood and blinkers for the first time at Royal Ascot and he will be wearing both again at Newmarket. I think that it helps him a little bit because he can get a little bit wound up in the stalls, like a lot of sprinters do. I don't want to
lose a length or two in races like this and it gives him a bit more focus.”
Trainer Aidan O’Brien is counting on Power, After, and Reply, to notch a victory in this race. Power looks like the one with the most potential since, he prevailed in the Group 1 Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh over 1 mile, where he claimed
the victory and the prize of £145,000 by a small margin of a length.
