Dandy Boy stepping up to the graded company in the Group 1 Darley July Cup
Representing the trainer, David Marnane is the six-year-old bay horse, Dandy Boy, who will battle out the Group 1 Darley July Cup with twenty other contestants. The race marks out to be a milestone event in the four years’ career of Danetime’s son as it will take him over to the graded company with which he has not raced before.
Winning is an altogether different benchmark, but racing and competing against racing legends like Bated Breath, Aidan O’Brien trained Power, Society Rock and Ortensia, will also open up new racing experience zones for the Italian bay horse, Dandy Boy out of mare, Fleet Of Light.
The trainer commented: "He's been a phenomenal horse for us and to win a third big handicap like that in the manner he did shows what a good horse he is on his day. He's a fragile horse and when they are right and well you have to take your chance.
"The ground was just good at Ascot, it was touch and go whether he would run because of softer ground but he's a little bit older now and he is fragile so maybe he enjoys a bit ease in the ground now. I think he moved better at Ascot on the slightly easier surface."
The six-year-old has raced five times during the new season but it was only during the most recent outing that the Malih Lahej Al Basti owned posted his seasonal debut success.
He won the Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap) on 23rd June, 2012 at the Ascot race course over six furlongs. The horse raced to success with jockey, Pat Dobbs onboard and the two had the final strides in command even though they had to hold up before going all out when there remained the last two furlongs to race.
Qualifying as the runner up was, Waffle who got defeated by 1 ¼ lengths margin and was soon joined by Hawkeyethenoo.
According to the trainer, the softer and easier ground conditions at the Ascot suited the bay horse who now finds firm and heavy ground difficult to race over due to age.
How receptive will the six-year-old be at the Newmarket ground and how tactfully will he deal with the competition, does not need to be waited for long.
