Dane Gudauskas, Nathan Carvalho and Santiago Muniz prevail in Round 2 at Coastal Edge ECSC
America’s Dane Gudauskas, Hawaii’s Nathan Carvalho and Argentina’s Santiago Muniz successfully advanced to the third round (Round of 48) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star Coastal Edge ECSC presented by Vans after claiming top honours
in their respective Round 2 (Round of 96) heats that went down at Virginia Beach in Virginia, America, on Thursday, August 23.
America’s Nat Young finished behind Gudauskas in the opening heat to accompany the latter into the next round of the competition. Hawaii’s Koa Smith and Americas Brad Ettinger finished in third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting eliminated
from the competition.
The second heat saw Brazil’s Thiago Camarao successfully extend his life in the competition as well, courtesy of his runner-up place behind Carvalho. Hawaii’s Keala Naihe and his fellow countryperson Mason Ho got eliminated from the event following their
bottom-two finish.
The third heat saw France’s Romain Cloitre accompany Muniz into the next round of the competition following his runner-up finish. Brazil’s Jano Belo and America’s Nic Hdez finished in third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting removed from
the contention for the event title.
The conditions prevailing at the primary event site offered quite a bit of an opportunity for the surfers to go for aerial tricks.
The opening heat of Round 2 featured an intense battle between Gudauskas and Young, with both the surfers putting on quite a determined performance. Gudauskas eventually managed to clinch the win with a two-wave total of 14.16 points, whereas his compatriot
had to settle for a runner-up finish due to his heat-total of 13.27 points.
Smith and Ettinger failed to make much of an impact, registering a two-wave total of 9.20 and 7.33 points respectively.
Carvalho walked away with top honours in the second heat after putting on a superb performance to reach a heat-total of 16.20 points. Camarao failed to respond with the necessary score and only managed to reach a two-wave total of 13.00 points.
Naihe and Ho finished with a two-wave total of 6.83 and 4.09 points respectively.
The third heat saw Muniz and Cloitre fight tooth-and-nail until the very last minute, clearly not ready to make any comprise on victory. The intense contest eventually finished in favour of Muniz after he registered a heat-total of 13.10 points against his
rival’s 13.00. Nevertheless, both the surfers advanced to the next round of the competition.
Belo finished in third position with a heat-total of 11.70 points, while Hdez registered a two-wave total of 10.60.
