Dane Reynolds receives wildcard for 2012 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast – 2012 ASP World Tour
America’s Dane Reynolds has received wildcard entry into 2012 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast that is scheduled to get underway from February 25 in Gold Coast, Australia.
The 26-year-old Reynolds had failed to qualify for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, but still received an invitation for the opening event of the latest season, much to the delight of his fans.
Considered among the surfing elites, the Ventura-based Reynolds was forced to sit out of majority of the events during the 2011 ASP World Tour due to injuries. This not only got him fined by ASP for withdrawing from the events, but also kept him from amassing
vital points to improve his standings on the ASP World Rankings.
Reynolds is excited about the opportunity that has been presented to him by the event organisers and looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans at Snapper Rocks at Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast.
The possibility of getting pitted against the 11-time ASP World Champion and defending event champion Kelly Slater of America is adding to the excitement of the Californian surfer.
“I hope it’s Kelly. It would be fun,” Reynolds said. “I’ve surfed this event as many times as a wildcard as I have a WCT surfer and the wave can be super fun. It can be barrels or peelers so it’s good for everything. I rate it highly.”
The Long Beach-native is not the only one who is looking forward to facing Slater at Snapper Rocks. The reigning ASP World Champion himself considers Reynolds to be one of the greatest surfers in the world.
“If you watch a guy like Dane Reynolds, who obviously is one of the greatest surfers in the world, he could end up being one of the greats of all time and technically, right now, he is as good as anyone has ever been,” Slater said. “He doesn’t hold back
in contests.”
While Reynolds has received one of the two wildcards for the upcoming ASP World Tour event, the second slot will be going to the winner of The Moskova Trials that are scheduled to be held on Friday, January 24.
