Dane Reynolds withdraws from Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
USA’s Dane Reynolds officially withdrew from the sixth event of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro New York, on Tuesday, Septemebr 6, citing bruised ribs.
The 26-year-old Californian had turned up in New York over the weekend, showing his intention to participate in the competition and was even in attendance at the opening ceremony on Monday.
Reportedly, Reynolds had planned on sitting out his first round heat to give himself more time to heal and make his entrance into the matches in Round 2. However, he decided to officially withdraw from the competition on Tuesday after learning that his injury
would take longer to heal.
Talking to a leading sports network, Reynolds said, “I was hoping to surf this event. I was thinking it would heal pretty quick. But then I spoke with Bede [Durbidge] He had a similar injury last year. He told me it would take a bit longer.”
The Long Beach-resident is yet to make his entry into the latest season of the ASP World Tour. He had pulled out of the previous five stops of the season due to a knee injury. The last minute withdrawal from Billabong Jeffreys Bay in South Africa had gotten
him fined $2,500. Despite the severe consequences, Reynolds repeated the violation of ASP rules once again by withdrawing from the recently concluded Billabong Pro Tahiti. ASP was looking into the matter to judge whether the American had a valid reason for
withdrawing and if they were not satisfied with the justification, Reynolds could very well be facing another fine of $5,000 for repeating the offence.
Reynolds’ manager, Blair Marlin, had told a surfing website last month that the Long Beach-based surfer had full intention of showing up at New York for the next stop on the 2011 ASP World Tour. The claim had turned out to be true in respect to Reynolds’
showing up for the event; though it did not exactly turn out the way the surfing fans had hoped for.
Reynolds was last seen in action during the ASP Prime event, Nike US Open of Surfing, last month at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, where he had progressed to the quarter-finals before getting eliminated.
With Reynolds withdrawing from the event, Hawaii’s Keanu Asing will replace the Californian surfer in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro New York on Wednesday.
