Danedream – A rare successful German-bred filly
Although Germany is not known to produce brilliant racehorses, yet there are some of them, who have earned a big name in the sport at the highest level. One of these runners is, Danedream, who has got a very good record and is still going strongly under
the training of P. Schiergen.
The four-year-old filly made her first appearance in June 2010 at Wissembourg in France. The competition was not a tough one, thus she had no issues in winning it comfortably by two and a half lengths. She was up against just a couple of more German-bred
challengers, who were also making their debut in the sport.
Although the young filly did a decent job in her second race as well, she had to face a controversy in her next outing. She was priced 21 to 1 back then and did a pretty decent job, winning by three quarters in the end. However, the result was changed after
the completion of the event.
Danedream was dropped from first to third because of some illegal move and that must have shattered her confidence, as her form dipped to some extent afterwards. Out of her five outings in 2010, she could only manage to win once, which was not a positive
sign for her team.
The 2011 season started in a normal way for Lomitas’s daughter and she had to fight hard in the first couple of events before winning one race at San siro. She was the outright favourite to win that time around and gained a lot of confidence after this Group-2
success.
Although Danedream failed to repeat such a show in the very next race, she made a strong comeback in the Grosser Preis von Berlin and Grosser Preis von Baden, winning both the prestigious events comfortably by five and six lengths respectively. She was not
rated as the favourite in both of them, but still outperformed her rivals with ease.
Soon after her success in the Group-1 events, the talented filly went onto prevail in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Her performance was exceptional, as she covered the race distance in a record time. She became only the second German to win
this race after Star Appeal, who achieved the honour way back in 1975.
Following a successful run in the 2011 season, Danedream started 2012 season on a positive note, winning a Group-2 event. However, she was unable to carry on the same momentum in her next race and ended in a disappointing sixth place.
The German-bred filly made her last appearance in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and was up against some extremely good runners. She was priced 9 to 1 by the bookies. Despite all that, she did a fabulous job and took the top spot
by just a nose distance in the end.
The Gestut Burg Eberstein & Teruya Yoshida’s owned runner became to first ever German to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and improved her tally to seven victories in 16 attempts.
Other than her impressive performances in several prestigious events, Danedream managed to win a couple of awards as well. She was awarded the Cartier Racing Award in November 2011, which was a great honour for her team.
Looking at the record of this talented challenger, one can easily say that she deserved all this success in her career. She is the only filly in history to win both the Arc and King George and has the potential to achieve a lot more.
