bDanica Delaquis wins Women’s 50m breaststroke heat: Day one – Western Canadian Championships
Danica Delaquis of MANTA dictated terms to her competitors by winning the preliminary rounds of Women’s 50m breaststroke in the 15 and under category on primary day of the 2012 Speedo Western Canadian Championships in Winnipeg, Canada on Thursday, February 16.
Delaquis experienced strong resistance from Hillary Metcalfe of LOSC in the breaststroke discipline, but managed to overpower her strongest competitor’s effort on the concluding wall.
With her relentless efforts, the 15-year-old Delaquis managed to prove her eligibility for the finest qualification spot of the race. She showered her stupendous skills and smothered all struggles of her rivals in the 50m discipline.
She submitted a time of 33.79 seconds to enter the final round as top contender for gold medal. With her persistent efforts, she remained just 0.02 seconds away from her following swimmer, Metcalfe, who earned second finest spot of the swim by reporting a time of 33.81 seconds.
The 13-year-old Metcalfe was trailed by Kelsey Crocker of CASC, who kept her challenger at a considerable bay and hit the wall with an effort of 33.95 seconds to qualify for the final.
After a while, the audience observed breathtaking performance of Tianna Rissling in the equivalent event in Women’s 16 and over class. The 19-year-old Rissling demonstrated her eye-catching skills and confirmed her fastest qualification spot by completing her swim in a time of 31.68 seconds.
The top fastest finisher was followed by Kierra A Smith of LISC, who remained nearly one body length slower from her and ensured her second finish in the event by producing a phenomenal effort of 32.87 seconds.
The 18-year-old Smith was chased by Kristy Gabruck of LASC, who stayed just two strokes behind her preceding swimmer. The 24-year-old Gabruck was 0.17 seconds apart and reported an effort of 33.04 seconds for third position.
Delaquis was happy with her fastest qualifying effort in the 50m breaststroke discipline. In addition, the session came to an end after the conclusion of all scheduled events while these qualifying swimmers will compete with each other in their respective playoffs to prove their mettle for the top spot on the podium.
