Daniel Agger out for a lengthy duration
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed defender Daniel Agger is set for a long-term absence after seeing specialists about a calf injury.
Agger last played in the middle of October when he represented Denmark in a Euro 2010 qualifying game against Cyprus. The Liverpool boss says it's difficult to create an idea of his return date.
"Agger could be very long-term. They can't put a date on it and at the moment he can't train, he has just got to rest. They are anxious that bone doesn't form. It's a calcification issue [a build up of
calcium salts]," said Hodgson.
Liverpool will miss Agger because he's a very feisty type of player who adds something different to the defence. However, there are players who can cover in Agger's absence.
A big miss
Agger is one of the more aggressive defenders in the football club. He is similar to Jamie Carragher in the respect that he is loud enough to re-organise the defence in a very short space of time. Aggressive
defenders are necessary to counter the skill of certain strikers.
He's very versatile and Liverpool may miss this more than anything else. Agger is most effective at centre half but he is good enough to play at left back against any side in the Premier League.
Hodgson has a number of defenders that will continue to make up for Agger's absence. The likes of Martin Skrtel and Fabio Aurelio can cover the positions that Agger plays for the club.
"Training would certainly accelerate the calcification. Now they have to wait and hope the body breaks down the calcifying elements before he can even think about training again. He has just got to rest
and wait for the next time he goes to see the specialist again," added Hodgson.
Betting advice
Liverpool has just enjoyed a very good 2-0 win over Chelsea. Although the news about Agger is going to be a blow to the club, it will not have a huge effect on the current form of the team. There is no
need to change any particular betting styles concerning Liverpool.
