Influential Liverpool defender, Daniel Agger, has blasted the Reds’ below standard defending in the pre-season friendly matches and has urged his teammates to improve the defensive aspect of their game if they want to bring success to Anfield next season.
Agger, who scored a brace against Valerenga, has expressed his disappointment with Liverpool’s performance against the Norwegian side especially in the first half. The Reds conceded two early goals but managed to get one back just before half time through
Andy Carroll.
The 26-year-old told the reporters, “Against Valerenga, it just wasn't good enough, especially in the first half.”
The Danish defender has expressed his contentment with the Reds’ impressive comeback in the second half. Agger scored a brace in the second half to put Liverpool ahead.
However, Valerenga equalised in injury time to end the friendly match as a 3-3 draw. The Reds defender believes that his team’s second half performance was quite satisfactory but still he was not completely happy with the result.
"The second was OK but it still wasn't what it needs to be,” added the Danish international.
Liverpool’s defence has failed to really impress during the pre-season friendly matches. The Reds have conceded 15 goals in their last five matches and Agger believes that the rearguard would now be a huge concern for Kenny Dalglish ahead of the Barclays
Premier League season. The Danish defender wants the Liverpool players to work hard on their defence and has insisted that the Reds should now aim to keep a clean sheet in their next friendly match.
He added, "The amount of goals we've conceded is not good enough. We need to show we can keep a clean sheet and must defend better. "If you are a footballer, you have to be a perfectionist and so far we have to admit it's not been good enough.”
However, the 26-year-old centre-back is confident that Kenny Dalglish will be able to sort out the defensive problems before the start of the next campaign.
"Kenny has his way of getting his point across and has said himself that we need to be streetwise - that's what we have got to do," Daniel Agger concluded.
Liverpool will play their next friendly against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863 on August 6, 2011.
