The quarterfinals for the men’s singles competition of the 2011 Eckental Challenger made its way on November 4, 2011. Ruben Bemelmans (Belgium) faced Daniel Brands (Germany) where the German was dominant in both the sets to win
the match 7-5, 6-4.
Brands, the24-year old player, showed an impressive play with the ball as he proved once again that he can become one the best players from Germany. He cruised further into the tournament by winning his matches against Philipp
Oswald (Austria) and Malek Jaziri (Tunisia).
Just like he defeated Oswald with dominance, much in the same way, he won his match against Bemelmans by not giving him any points.
Bemelmans, ranked at 153rd spot in the world, was also consistent in his wins during this tournament. In his past matches, he defeated Robin Kern (Germany) and Philipp Petzschner (Germany). Bemelmans has beaten both
German opponents in his quest to enter the next rounds of the tournament.
In the quarterfinals against Brands, the German gave the spectators something to cheer about by triumphing against Bemelmans and entering the semi finals.
During the first set Bemelmans showed aggressive play when he was nearing to a win. The Belgian scored seven aces with a single double fault. Brands, on the other hand, scored five aces but he maintained his steady lead throughout
the set.

did not concede any breakpoints for he was using his service games to sustain the lead.
The German’s error free serves also provided him the chance for not conceding any double faults, giving him the momentum to keep winning games in the first set.
Bemelmans could have won the first set when he sealed his fifth game, but Brands was able to halt his opponents’ progress in the set. Brands won the first set 7-5.
Brands played the second set better than the Belgian. Brands scored seven aces with first serve winning ratio of 61%. He did concede double faults twice, but his higher first serve winning ratio filled up his errors.
Bemelmans, on the other hand, scored four aces and conceded two double faults. He remained on the offensive in the second set, which could be the reason why he was not able to get any advantage in winning the second set.
Brands was effectively utilizing his first serves in each of his service games. He won 89% points on his first serve. The Belgian was not getting his serves delivered on the right spot as he won only 65% points on his first serve.
During the first set, Brands was cautious not to give any breakpoint to his opponent, but in the second set, Brands was able to save the only breakpoint he faced. His opponent, however, won five out of his six breakpoints.
Brands won the second set 6-4 because of his decent run and consistent service games. He has now cruised into the semi finals. All eyes will be on him to bring glory to Germany by entering the finals and winning the title.
