Daniel Brands downs Dustin Brown in the second round – XVI Open Barletta 2012
Eighth seed, Daniel Brands of Germany, survived the thrashing in the opener to outlast world number 142, Dustin Brown, in three sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the second round at the XVI Open Barletta on Thursday. The German required one
hour and 46 minutes to beat his compatriot in a close match.
Brown was the first to strike, as he snatched a break in the third game of the opening set and won his next serve to grab a 3-1 lead. The 27-year-old did not lose his serve even once, claiming it 6-4.
The Montego Bay, Jamaica resident bombarded four aces and captured 20 of the 25 first serve points. Brown saved all the four break points he faced and converted one of the two chances he created in the opener.
Brands made a solid start in the second set, claiming a breakthrough in the second game and capitalising on it, attaining a 3-0 lead. The German did not let away this advantage till the end and sealed it 6-3.
The 6ft 5in tall pounded three aces and 69 percent of the first serves, converting 17 of the 25 of them into points in the second set. He dominated with the help of his accurate second deliveries and returns, clinching seven of
the 11 and seven of the 14 points on them respectively.
After grabbing the second set comfortable, Brands had the confidence and got complete control of the match. With the winning momentum on his side, the German crushed his opponent, as he did not lose even a single game and broke
thrice to win 6-0.
Brands continued to claim easy points on his serves and returns, as he banged in two aces and 75 percent of the first deliveries, pocketing 11 of the 15 points on them. The German bagged three of the five second serve and eight
of the 12 second return points. The Bogen, Germany resident put away the only break threat he came across and availed three of the four opportunities he created in the decider.
The right-hander, Brands is slated to meet second seed, Filippo Volandri, in the quarterfinals.
