Daniel Brands downs Niels Desein in qualifiers – BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2012
Qualifying second seed, Daniel Brands, trashed the Belgian contender, Niels Desein, in straight sets at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy 2012 on Sunday. He nudged up a 6-4, 6-2 victory against the world number 434 to power into the final round of the qualifying
competition of this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) clay court event taking place in Romania.
The 24-year-old German overpowered Desein in one hour and 14 minutes in their fourth encounter after hammering angled shots down the line. The players last met each other at the Monza Challenger two years ago and after earning this success, Brands maintained
his winning record against the Belgian.
Brands convincingly entered the BNR Arenas and held his opening serve to tie the scores at 1-1. He then continued smashing powerful forehands to bag remaining serves without facing any hindrance. The German got the breakthrough in the seventh game and clinched
the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The former world number 66, Brands carried his winning ways in the following set and swiftly pocketed his entire serves without facing any breakpoint. He earned the coveted break in the third game to take the initial lead. The German capitalised on another
break chance in the seventh game and sealed the set by winning six games to two.
All in all, the Bogen resident struck four aces and converted three out of seven break opportunities to his advantage. He also spilled fewer double faults and clicked 24 out of 28 points on his slightly higher first serve share.
Currently ranked 119th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Brands will next confront the sixth seed, Gianluca Naso, who stomped over the local challenger, Andrei Mlendea, in straight sets to set-up this battle. The seeded Italian
brushed off both breakpoints he faced and cashed in three out of 12 break opportunities to formulate a 6-3, 6-2 score line.
The qualifying top seed, Martin Klizan, faced a bitter fate later that day. He was edged out by Hungary’s Attila Balazs with a 3-6, 4-6 defeat in one hour and 22 minutes. Klizan broke his opponent’s serve twice but was broken down five times to suffer this
loss.
