Daniel Brands hits back at Tobias Kamke to enter round two – BMW Open 2013
In an all-German clash, Daniel Brands made an epic comeback to overpower Tobias Kamke in a three-set thriller at the BMW Open 2013 on Monday. He summed up a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory against his wild card compatriot to secure a spot in the second round at this
outdoor clay court event taking place in Munich, Germany.
Brands made a drastic entry at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event. However, he sought his rhythm afterwards and eventually pocketed the match in just over two hours. The contenders last met each other at the Braunschweig
Challenger three years ago and after earning this victory, Brands maintained his winning record.
The high flying German was quoted in a courtside interview after clinching the match:
"I’m extremely happy now because I played good. I tried to play aggressive."
Ranked 76th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Kamke high-spiritedly entered the match. He swiftly held his entire serves with conviction and got the breakthrough in the last game, eventually clinching the opener with a 7-5 score
line.
Brands got his head back in the game in the proceeding set. He drew the first blood in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. The higher ranked German maintained consistency in his game and capitalised another break chance in the seventh game, eventually
taking a 5-2 lead. Apart from serving out the equaliser in the very next game, he held his serve once again and bagged the set with a 6-4 win.
The world number 69, Brands held his composure in the deciding set. He ruled the set and eventually sealed the decider by winning six games to three.
This was Brands’ 10th tour level victory of the season. He is coming off from quarter-final showing at the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy in Bucharest last week. The German is hoping to carry his momentum at this event. He reflected,
"That would be nice, but it’s not easy here in Munich because the draw is really strong. I just try my best every match and hope that I can get far in the tournament."
Next up for Brands is the conqueror of the match between eighth seed Jurgen Melzer and the French wild card entrant, Gael Monfils.
