Daniel Brands moves to quarter-finals; ousts Paolo Lorenzi in round two – IPP Open 2011 CH
Daniel Brands, German world No.137, made his way into the quarter-final stage of IPP Open 2011 on Thursday, 24th November, beating down Italian world No.110, Paolo Lorenzi, in straight set, 6-4, 6-3, in an hour and seven
minutes hard indoor court match at Tali, Helsinki, Finland.
Lorenzi, winning the service toss, warmed up and followed with serving the first game of the match, turning down the scoreboard, 1-0. Following the Italian, Brands took out his opening serve evening up the scores at 1-1. Carrying
on, both went on to bag a game each and even up at 2-2 before the game changed its course.
Italian world No.110 served next, however, was unable to make most out of his serve and lost. Breaking the 29-year-old, German 24-year-old took advantage of the breakpoint as he served out game six, and led the score card, 4-2.
However, it wasn’t long when Lorenzi struck back.
Serving out game seven, 4-3, Italian stallion broke back to level up the scores at 4-4. Carrying on with his serve, Lorenzi got a shocker as his 24-year-old rival broke him in game nine, 5-4, and then followed with a service winner
clinching away the first set of the match with a blink of an eye, 6-4.
Struggling to cope up with his lower ranked rival, Lorenzi failed to make an impact in set two as well. Serving the set opener, Italian was brought down to his knees right away. Breaking the higher ranked rival like a piece of
cake, Brands took control of the match as he bagged his second consecutive win, 2-0, switching back the serve to Lorenzi.
Winning his first game, world No.110 finally had a breather winning game three, 2-1, however, was unable to break back at any point. The scores went up as the two bagged games of respective serves, however, the set ended with a
spectacular breakpoint finish by the 24-year-old German, bagging his second consecutive match win, 6-4, and winning the fixture in straight sets.
Statistically, Brands had a greater win ratio of his first serve and first returns. The four breakpoints added extra points for the German to edge past the Italian. Nevertheless, Brands concluded the fixture with 38 service points
and 24 returners totalling 62 against 47 of the Italian.
Moving onto the quarter-final stage of the event, German 24-year-old now plays the in-form seventh seed of the event, Michael Berrer for the semi-final spot of the ATP Challenger Tour event.
