Daniel Brands prevails over Ruben Bemelmans in the first round – Erste Bank Open 2012
World number 111, Daniel Brands, successfully took the better of the Belgian professional, Ruben Bemelmans, in the round one of the Erste Bank Open 2012. Both the contestants gave each other a tough competition but Brands penned
down a 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3 win, shocking the higher ranked rival on Tuesday at the hard courts of Vienna, Austria.
In the year 2011, Bemelmans gave a straight-set defeat to the German player in the first round of the Ortisei Challenger held in Italy.
The 24-year-old, Bemelmans, started the match at an average pace and the two participants preserved their serves the entire time. The opener proved to be tough when the score line levelled down after every alternate game, proving
the participants remarkable passion to clinch the win. The Belgian sustained his serve precision and journeyed confidently to conclude the initial set at 7-6(5) after a tough tiebreaker round.
Both played manifested a similar initial serve precision of 71 percent. The 25-year-old, German fired seven aces bagging home 22 of 25 first and six of 10 second delivery points. The left-hander, Bemelmans, bombarded eight aces
with 27 of 30 first but just five of 12 second serve points.
In the second set, the German right-hander, assertively marched forward and held his poise with a strong determination to secure the lead. The duo repeated the opening set's pattern, evening out the scores three times. Brands took
a flying start in the eighth game, cashing the lone serve opportunity and gleefully closed the set with a 6-4 lead.
Ranked 109th in the ATP World Tour Rankings, Bemelmans, lost his winning pace and his opponent proved intelligent enough to pick the lead. The German participant cashed his first serve and completely thumped down his
moral. Brands secured the initial three games without facing any real challenge and boldly drew the first blood. After that point, the players held their serves but the lower ranked German was of no match against the Belgian native. He nudged forward to conclude
the decider with a 6-3 win.
For the next round, Brands will face a tough deal against the top seeded Argentinean professional, Juan Martin Del Potro.
