Daniel Bringolf grabs an early lead at the Golf South Australian Amateur Classic
The first round of the Golf South Australian Amateur Classic saw Sydney’s Daniel Bringolf emerge as the first round leader with an impressive score of four-under, 67. Two strokes behind the leader are Geoff Drakeford and Anthony Houston.
Bringolf has come a long way after finishing in the Top 15 at several occasions, but has won just one tournament; the 2010 Northern Territory Open Amateur Championship, and also finished third in last month’s Tasmanian Open.
“It’s always good to get off to a great start in these events,” said Bringolf. “Today, I found the course to my liking. I putted well and was playing into position which enabled me to be more aggressive into to greens.”
Bringolf, however, has not forgotten that the field is strengthened by some of the experienced amateur players of the circuit. With nine of the Top 20 Australian amateur players and some 15 out of the Top 20 Australian players, the tournament will prove
to be a tough battle for the young Bringolf in the proceeding rounds.
“There’s a lot of good players out there competing and anything can happen, the focus in these events is to try to be in the mix on Sunday, and that’s my plan. Not to get to carry away and retain my focus so as to be in with a chance,” he added.
The current Australian Amateur Champion, Matt Stieger is tied for the 13th position with his opening round of one-over, 72. Stieger is safe as long as he remains within the Top 36, where the cut will be placed after Friday’s second round results.
Bret Drewitt, another of the mainstream player from the Amateur Circuit, played brilliantly on the first day and is well pitched to clinch the lead in the rounds ahead. Drewitt, with his one-under, 70, is currently tied for the fourth position along with
2011 Riversdale champion, Nathan Holman.
Also in contention for the fourth place are the SA Amateur Classic defending champion Brad Moules, winner of the Tasmanian Amateur, Kalem Richardson and Michael Smith who won the 2009 NSW Amateur Championship.
