Daniel Chopra finishes fourth at the Iskandar Johor Open
Daniel Chopra of Sweden, who led the weather-shortened Iskandar Johor Open after two rounds, failed the final-day test, and finished fourth on the leaderboard, on Sunday, December 16, 2012.
The tournament was being staged at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club, and was reduced to 54 holes, after the inclement weather forced the game to suspend several times during the week.
Entering the final round, Chopra held a one-stroke lead over Chapchai Nirat. He got off to a decent start, as he birdied four of the first eight holes that he played. He then parred the ninth hole, to reach the turn in four-under.
Thereafter, he failed to keep the momentum going, and faltered on the back nine of the course. He conceded two bogeys against a lone birdie, to finish with a three-under par final-round score.
At the end of the day, he found himself settled for a 13-under par tournament score.
In the meantime, Sergio Garcia of Spain made a strong charge on the leaderboard, by firing an 11-under par 61, to accumulate a three-day total of an 18-under par 198.
Not a single player in the field managed to match his overall score on the leaderboard. As a result, Garcia comfortably took home the last trophy of the 2012 Asian Tour season.
Jonathan Moore also carded an 11-under par 61 in the final round. However, his average performance over the first two rounds did not allow him to challenge Garcia on the top.
The biggest story of the day included Thaworn Wiratchant winning the Asian Tour Order of Merit title for the second time in his career.
Wiratchant desperately needed to finish better than Marcus Fraser, in the tournament, in order to retain the top spot in the money list.
Entering the final round, he was trailing Fraser by two strokes. Thereafter, he made a strong charge on the leaderboard, by firing a seven-under par 65, to finish tied for the fifth position.
Fraser, in the meantime, failed to keep the momentum going, and faltered for an even-par score. At the end of the week, he was sharing the 21st position on the leaderboard.
