Daniel Chopra leads the Shubhkamna Champions golf tournament after round one
Daniel Chopra stormed into lead after round one of the Shubhkamna Champions golf tournament, after firing an eight-under par 64, on Friday, December 21, 2012.
The tournament is being staged at the Noida Golf Club, featuring a strong line-up vying for a share of INR6 million prize purse.
The inaugural edition of the event has reeled in some prominent names, including the likes of Jeev Milkha Singh, Arjun Atwal, Daniel Chopra, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur, Anirban Lahiri, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Himmat Rai.
Chopra, who is currently enjoying a decent run of form, carded eight birdies and an eagle, against two bogeys, to settle two strokes better than Ajeetesh Sandhu and Anura Rohana.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, he expressed his pleasure in getting off to such a flying start in the inaugural edition of the ‘tournament of champions’.
He stated that he played well from the tee to the green and his efforts paid him off in the form of the lead. He now plans to remain consistent in the remaining two rounds, in a bid to secure his maiden victory of the year.
When asked about the course conditions, he said that it was really easy to post a low score. However, the key to success was playing straight and hitting the fairways on regular basis.
According to him, hitting the fairways was necessary to create birdie chances. In the meantime, his brilliant short game technique also helped him making a strong start in the event.
"It was great. It was a fantastic. I played well, drove nicely, and putted nicely, despite missing two putts inside three feet. It could have been a really low round," said Chopra, who recorded top-10 finishes in each of his last two starts on the Asian
Tour.
"With the shot gun start I can't remember where the birdies came, but the eagle was, I think, on 17. I had a mix of long and short putts. I missed a two-footer for birdie on 11th and missed a three-footer for par on 18th. The key here is driving straight
and putting well," he added.
