Daniel Chopra misses out on a chance of celebrating his birthday with a success in the Shubhkamna Champions
Daniel Chopra missed out on a chance to celebrate his birthday with a victory at the Shubhkamna Champions golf tournament, after he failed to hold on to his lead, on Sunday, December 23, 2012.
The three-day ‘tournament of champions’ was hosted by Jeev Milkha Singh, and was staged at the Noida Golf Club.
Singh brought together a total of 30 players, including 10 International tour members and 20 last season’s PGTI champions, who competed against each other for the INR6 million prize fund.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Chopra remained consistent and cheered his fans with a good display of the game.
He marked a flying start to his campaign on Friday, after he carded an eight-under par 64, to take the lead. He then added a 68 to his scorecard on day two, to remain on top of the leaderboard.
However, the final round witnessed Shiv Kapur imposing the defeat on him, after the veteran Indian fired a seven-under par 65, against Chopra’s 70.
At the end of the day, Chopra found himself settled three strokes behind Kapur, who secured his first victory in seven years.
Talking to the reporters after completing his round, he praised the way Kapur played in the final round.
In the meantime, he also expressed his pleasure in recording another top-10 finish in a row – he finished sixth at the Thailand Golf Championship and fourth at the Iskandar Johor Open, his last two starts on the Asian Tour.
"Well Shiv (Kapur) played great. I tried my best and at times maybe a little too hard. But then it has been a great three weeks - sixth in Thailand, fourth in Johor and second here," he said.
"I met all my old friends, and celebrated my birthday with them. Maybe the win would have been the icing, but then that's golf. Still I enjoyed myself thoroughly and would love to be back soon,” he added.
Singh, in the meantime, donated all his prize money to the 23-year-old victim, who was brutally raped and tortured by five men and was thrown out of the bus on a busy road of New Delhi, the India’s capital.
