Daniel Cormier eyeing fight against Frank Mir – UFC News
Strikeforce undefeated heavyweight contender Daniel Cormier has signed contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship . While Dana White, President of the UFC, is hoping Cormier to face heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, Cormier has already declined
the notion, saying he will not fight his teammate at any cost.
Cormier is currently scheduled to face Dion Staring at Strikeforce’s final event on January 12.
“So I go, 'OK, Frank Mir and I are going to fight, then,” said Cormier on FUEL TV’s ‘UFC Tonight’.
“I could have said, 'I deserve to get a title shot right when I get there,' but it goes back to Dion Staring,” he added. “After Dion, I don't it puts me in a position to ask for an immediate title shot.”
It should be noted here that White is already considering Cormier for a title shot against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, if in case the match between Cain and Cormier does not happen.
“I want to try to leave my mark on the sport. I'm older, I started late, and imagine in this day and age a guy going up and down and being successful. That would make a mark, I think,” added Cormier.
White does not have Cormier on his high priority list but he surely knows the potential the Olympian brings along. White would put Cormier against an opponent who can stand up tough against him instead of making it a no-go show.
For now, White is probably waiting to see if Cormier is able to defeat Dion this month. If so happens, White would be happy to welcome yet another undefeated fighter in UFC. At least, Strikeforce has given UFC some great fighters such as Ronda Rousey and
Daniel Cormier.
If White feels Cormier is up against Cain and the match can happen, he will probably find a way to get it done. However, if White feels it is not possible then he probably will not insist on it and instead put Cormier against Jon Jones, if the Olympian is
ready to go down to the light heavyweight division.
All we can do is wait right now to see where Cormier will land in UFC.
