Daniel Cormier waiting for a fight against Jon Jones – UFC News
It seems like everyone has his eyes on a title shot against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Unbeaten contender Daniel Cormier is hoping a showdown against the American champion, believing sooner or later it has to happen.
Cormier currently stands with 10 wins and 0 losses in his portfolio, while Jones stands with 17 wins and 1 loss. Cormier had sparked the idea of coaching against Jones on The Ultimate Fighter but ‘Bones’ rejected it. Instead, the light heavyweight champion
went on to face The American Gangster Chael Sonnen as his nemesis. Definitely, like everyone else, Cormier was shocked with the decision but he kept his cool, hoping that one day Jones would have to accept his challenge.
“I think eventually, it's bound to happen,” said Cormier in an interview with MMA Uncensored. “Obviously, this guy mentions me and talks about how I don't have enough followers on Twitter to coach The Ultimate Fighter with him. It's a fight that people want
to say, and I think it'll definitely happen.”
Jones is now scheduled to face Chael Sonnen on The Ultimate Fighter season 17 next year. The fight has already garnered enough criticism from fans, analysts and fighters, who believe Sonnen was nowhere near being the number one contender. According to most
of them, Sonnen should prove himself in the division first in order to get a big fight.
However, President of the UFC Dana White clarified his decision saying every other top contender such as Lyoto Machida and Dan Henderson declined to fight Jones.
Henderson was scheduled to fight Jones at UFC 151 but he suffered a leg injury due to which the fight was cancelled. Similarly, White approached Machida to fight the champion at UFC 152, but he refused saying he needs more time to prepare for the title shot
than just a month’s notice.
White had no options left but to pursue Sonnen, who was already provoking Jones for a showdown. Probably, Sonnen made his way into the fight, like he always does. His merits are his skills of trash-talking and it always works for him, whether it is a fight
against Jones or Silva.
