Daniel Descalso’s homer helps St. Louis Cardinals defeat Florida Marlins 7-5 – MLB Update
The St. Louis Cardinals put in a tremendous performance as they defeated the Florida Marlins 7-5 at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on Tuesday, May 3.
Daniel Descalso’s home-run came in the seventh inning as the Cardinals were trailing behind the Marlins with a 7-4 score.
The loss proved disastrous for the Marlins as it brought them down to the second position after sharing first with Philadelphia Phillies. Clay Hansley was deeply troubled by what transpired on Tuesday night. "It is what it is," Hensley said. "I don't know
what else to say about it. The last few days have been pretty tough to get through, but I've got to go out there and pitch and help the ballclub."
However, the chances that they failed to utilise proved costly and enabled the Cardinals to exploit them. St. Louis, after losing the last game against the Marlins despite getting early lead, this time had different strategies set for the encounter. They
started aggressively with Matt Holliday’s two-run homer when Anibal Sanchez came out to pitch. The 2-0 lead was successfully maintained in the next inning by Kyle McClellan of the Cardinals.
Cardinals took the lead to 3-0 in the second inning, as Allen Craig hit a single. Marlins came back with two singles of Chris Coghlan and Omar Infante. Florida brought down the lead to 3-2 in the third inning with respective singles of Greg Dobbs and John
Buck. The lead was reversed and then turned into a run advantage by Florida in the fourth inning by the two singles, making it 4-3 for the Marlins. Cardinals levelled the score in the fifth inning with Colby Rasmus’ single.
Marlins, for once had a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning with Gabby Sanchez’s single, as the Cardinals upped the ante against the Marlins with the astounding home-run of Descalso. His three runs brought the Cardinals to a strong position in the game which
was successfully defended by Eduardo Sanchez in the ninth inning, giving a conclusive 7-5 victory to St. Louis. Sanchez pitched brilliantly, as he contained the Marlins from cutting into the Cardinals’ lead.
It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals carry their winning momentum into the next game. The Marlins put in a good competitive performance but were unable to hold the lead and eventually lost the game.
