Daniel Descalso’s triple RBIs prevails St. Louis Cardinals over Florida Marlins, 7-5: MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals' infielder, Daniel Descalso, had an extraordinary day with the bat as he hit three RBIs and went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals' 7-5 win against the Florida Marlins at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis, on May 3.
Descalso had an impressive Minor League career as he struck 27 homers in 1596 games. After winning the game, he said of his game strategy, “I'm not a big home run guy. I just go up there and try to put a line-drive swing on it, and every once in a while they jump out of the park. Tonight was one of those times.”
The Cardinals opened their scoring account and took a 2-0 lead in the very first inning when Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer. It was considered as his fourth home run of the current season. He had only two hits in the game which lowered down his National League hitting average to .409.
Allen Craig hit an RBI single and posted a run to take the Cardinals' lead 3-0 in the second inning. The Marlins were unable to score in the first two innings, but they were on top with the bat in the third and fourth inning in which the Cardinals were restricted. The Marlins posted two runs in the third inning without hitting the ball as the Cardinals' starter, Kyle McClellan, gave two walks to Emilio Bonifacio and John Buck and the scorecard moved to 3-2.
McClellan was disappointed with his shaky performance and said, “It was just frustrating, a bunch of broken-bat hits and balls that weren't hit real hard. You break a bunch of bats, you like your chances.”
The Cardinals missed the chance of scoring runs in the third inning when Albert Pujols was grounded out at the plate. The Marlins led off with 4-3 in the fourth inning with two-run singles of Buck and Gregg Dobbs. They both added two RBIs for the Marlins. Yadier Molina scored a tie run in the fifth inning and leveled the game with 4-all.
The sixth inning remained score-less for both sides. The Marlins were on top for a brief duration when Gaby Sanchez completed a single run and went ahead with 5-4, but Descalso struck a one-run homer in the seventh inning including three-run shot to lead the Cardinals again with 7-5. The last two innings went without score.
The Marlins' manager, Edwin Rodriguez, consoled on his loss and said, “We had a chance all the way. We had a chance, they had a chance. Somebody had to win. Hensley hung that breaking ball, and Descalso took care of it.”
The Marlins' starter, Anibal Sanchez, gave six walks in his 4 1/3 innings. He also allowed four runs on six hits.
