Daniel Dias clinches Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day one - South African Long Course Nationals
Daniel Dias of BRA-ZZ clinched gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke in S1-S13 Multi-Class category on primary day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Monday, April 16.
The 23-year-old Dias spoiled the party of his challengers in the final round of 100m discipline. With his immaculate efforts, he continued his dominance in the playoff and seized gold medal of the backstroke discipline.
Dias asserted his supremacy over his challengers in the double lap event as he hit the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 16.80 seconds for gold medal.
His effort was trailed by Charl Bouwer of WPA-WP, who followed him on the medal rostrum for silver medal by clocking a time of 59.78 seconds.
Bouwer was followed by his teammate, Hendri J Herbst, who clinched bronze medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 1 minute and 14.66 seconds.
Herbst was chased by Achmat Hassiem, who ended his swim in fourth best place by producing a time of 1 minute and 09.14 seconds.
Next was the Women’s 100m backstroke in S14-S15 category, where Yvonne Smith of Fsa-FS outsmarted her opponents on the finishing blockade for gold medal.
The 21-year-old Smith stayed considerably ahead of her strongest challenger throughout the double lap event. With her magnificent efforts and notable strokes, Smith finished her swim in a time of 1 minute and 25.01 seconds to occupy gold medal of the event.
She was followed by Christelle Kriel of MP-MP, who suffered a loss of almost three seconds and ender her sprint in a time of 1 minute and 28.30 seconds.
Kriel was followed by Maritza Snyders of KZNA-KZ, who secured third position of the event with the timing of 1 minute and 36.84 seconds.
The fourth position of the discipline was secured by her team-member, Cornelia J Fowler, who stayed nearly half body length away and posted a time of 1 minute and 37.42 seconds.
In addition, the session ended after all swimming events while the position holders collected accolades for their ruthless efforts after the session.
