Daniel Dias secures Men’s 200m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Daniel Dias of Brazil secured gold medal of the Men’s 200m freestyle in S5 category on day three of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Saturday, September 1.
Dias demonstrated his stupendous efforts in the four lap freestyle event and overpowered his challengers over the finishing blockade for gold medal.
He remained in a comfortable lead over his closest opponent from the start and paved his way to the finishing wall for gold medal by producing a time of 2 minutes and 27.83 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Sebastian Rodriguez of Spain, who was almost 16 seconds slower from his foregoing finisher and tapped the wall with a timing of 2 minutes and 43.11 seconds for silver medal.
The Spanish player was traced by Roy Perkins of USA, who stayed only 0.03 seconds slower from overpowering his former finisher and stood on the victory stand for bronze medal by clocking a time of 2 minutes and 43.14 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the race was secured by Anthony Stephens of Great Britain, who stayed nearly 6.50 seconds slower and settled on the finishing blockade with a timing of 2 minutes and 49.83 seconds.
Stephens was chased by James Scully of Ireland, who remained 3.20 seconds away from his preceding swimmer and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 53.03 seconds for fifth place.
Similarly, Scully was followed by Cameron Leslie of New Zealand, who was 1.24 seconds apart and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 54.27 seconds for sixth position.
Leslie was trailed by Matija Grebenic of Croatia, who remained prominent for seventh position of the race by completing his race in a time of 3 minutes and 05.15 seconds. Jonas Larsen of Denmark did not start the race and thus was unable to grab any position.
Dias expressed happiness over his gruelling form at the medal distribution ceremony of the tournament and collected his medal after the event. In addition, Dias aroused hopes of his fans by saying that he would continue his struggle to excel in future events.
