Daniel Evans hopes for a wild card at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships – Tennis News
Great Britain’s upcoming player, Daniel Evans, is expecting to earn a wild card entry into the main draw at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
The world number 348 showed his potential once again during the Davis Cup tie against Belgium. British team’s 1-4 loss was not a surprise, as they were under dogs even before the start of the tie. However, Josh Goodall and specially
Evans put on a fine display against their much higher ranked opponents.
Evans said, talking to the media, “I'm going to try and get going again and get a bit of momentum going onto the grass. Hopefully I can bring Friday's form into my individual performances.”
The Brit gave his opponent a scare before going down against world number 56, Olivier Rochus of Belgium, in a four set thriller 6-3, 4-6, 6-7(7), 4-6 in the second rubber of the tie.
Evans is looking to enter the top-250 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings in order to be eligible for a wild card at the All England Club.
He added, "I'd love to be top 250 for Wimbledon. I have high hopes of making the main draw. I have a little say in it with my performances leading up to it but if my ranking's not where it should be then I don't deserve a wild
card.”
Evans has given a reasonable performance so far in this season, winning a futures event by beating David Rice in the final. The 21-year-old succeeded in qualifying for the main draw at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors but fell at the first
hurdle to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in three sets 4-6, 6-1, 1-6.
The Brit gave his best results during Great Britain’s Davis Cup tie against Slovakia, as he stunned world number 66, Lukas Lacko, and 90th ranked, Martin Klizan, to win both of his singles matches.
In his last tournament, Evans upset former world number 10, Arnaud Clement, in the first round of a challenger event in Le Gosier but then got beaten by Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the next match.
The Brit said, "I've got to do what I've been doing of late and I think my ranking will take care of itself. If I'm winning matches in the tournaments I'm going to be playing then my ranking's going to go up pretty quickly, and
that's what I plan to do."
Evans will start his quest after a couple of weeks at a challenger event in Naples.
