Daniel Geale-Dmitry Pirog unification title engagement almost finalised – Boxing News
According to a recent announcement made by promoters Gary Shaw and Artie Pelullo, talks for the settlement of the championship bout between Daniel Geale, the current IBF middleweight champion and Dmitry Pirog, the current WBO middleweight champion, are almost
close to finalisation and the duo will most probably collide on August 25, 2012.
As per the details, the two parties have been undergoing strenuous negotiations for the settlement of this middleweight title unification bout. The importance of the bout to the two camps is evident from the fact that the winner will be the sole ruler of
the middleweight division as far as the titles are concerned and will hold both the IBF as well as the WBO middleweight belts.
During a brief interview, while revealing the details of the close-to-finalised deal, Pelullo said, “It’s very close. We’re 99 percent done. I’m very excited about the opportunity for Pirog to be on HBO and for Dzinziruk to be back on HBO. These four fighters
are among the best in their respective weight classes, and it’s been a long time coming that they are on HBO.”
At the moment, the venue is not yet decided but the bout itself and the show on which the pay-per-view will be televised have been confirmed.
The unification bout will be televised on HBO and the special edition will be named as ‘Boxing After Dark’. In addition, the two camps are also close to seal the bout contract between Austin Trout and Sergiy Dzinziruk.
Austin-Sergiy duo will co-headline the event and will fight in the junior middleweight division. Daniel, 31, has been in a total 28 bouts and has lost just one skirmish to Anthony Mundine via close split decision.
Since then the Aussie proud is on a continue winning streak and obliterated Samir Dos Santos Barbosa to wear the vacant IBF Pan Pacific super middleweight gold. In May 2011, Daniel challenged Sebastian Sylvester and collected not only a split decision in
his favour but also the apex IBF divisional gold.
This will be Geale’s third title defence bout and the current world number two middleweight will try his level best to nail the 31-year-old Russian Pirog. Pirog is on a long undefeated win streak and has won all of his 19 bouts, 15 of them via knockout.
The bout will definitely be a toe-to-toe one the contract is still needed to be penned down. While sharing his idea of the under construction event, Shaw explained, “These are two very interesting, pick 'em fights. We’ll come out with someone important at
154 and definitely someone important at 160. I really believe there will be two people who come out of these fights who will be important to boxing in these two weight divisions.”
In the co-main event Austin will defend his WBA World light middleweight gold for the third time. The rest of the bouts are still to be decided.
