Daniel Gimeno-Traver ousts Javier Marti in quarters – Copa Sevilla 2012
In a battle between two Spanish contestants, second seeded Daniel Gimeno-Traver outmuscled his compatriot, Javier Marti, in straight sets at the Copa Sevilla 2012 on Thursday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-2 success over the 20-year-old to power into the semi-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event taking place in Seville, Spain.
The veteran required one hour and 15 minutes to trash Marti in their fourth meeting. After stealing the spotlight, Gimeno-Traver not only avenged his loss at the qualifying competition of Copa Claro in Buenos Aires but also advanced into the final four at this outdoor clay court event.
Gimeno-Traver assertively entered the Real Club de Tenis Betis. He swiftly bagged his entire serves without facing any trouble and got the breakthrough in the sixth game, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games to three. He converted one out of four break chances to his advantage.
Ranked 113th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Gimeno-Traver maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He got the critical break in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. After Marti kept his serve in the fifth game, the Spaniard stroke out the last three games and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
All in all, the 27-year-old manifested poor first serve share of 58 per cent in comparison with his opponent’s 84 per cent. However, he spectacularly marked 24 out of 26 points on it and fired seven aces to achieve his goal.
Next in line for the second seed is the Serbian challenger, Boris Pashanski, who tumbled Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets to set up this clash.
Gimeno-Traver will be joined by his fifth seeded compatriot, Inigo Cervantes, in the final four. He crushed the Ukrainian challenger, Oleksandr Nedovyesov, with a breadstick in one hour and 23 minutes to reach this spot. The Spaniard failed to block the lone breakpoint he came across but capitalised on four out of seven break chances to register a 6-1, 7-6(1) success.
He will face off the former world number five, Tommy Robredo, in the semi-finals.
