Daniel Gimeno-Traver ousts Nils Langer to enter quarters – Copa Sevilla 2012
Second seed, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, trounced the German challenger, Nils Langer, in straight sets at the Copa Sevilla 2012 on Wednesday. He penned down a 6-2, 6-2 success against the world number 353 to power into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event held in Seville, Spain.
The Spanish veteran needed one hour and 15 minutes to outmuscle Langer in their third meeting at Challenger events this season. After recording the victory, Gimeno-Traver avenged his loss at the Oberstaufen Challenger in July and progressed into the final
eight at this outdoor clay court event.
Gimeno-Traver made a powerful entry at the Real Club de Tenis Betis. After Langer held his opening serve, the Spaniard unleashed his skills and reeled off five games in a row. He then plucked his serve once again and sealed the opener by winning six games
to two. The Spaniard blocked both breakpoints he faced and cashed in half of the four break chances to prevail.
The 27-year-old went berserk into the following set. He winded up four games in a row before the German could hold on. Gimeno-Traver then pocketed his entire serves without encountering any barrier and held his remaining serves to clinch the set with a 6-2
score line.
Ranked 113th in the world, Gimeno-Traver showed brilliant skills throughout the battle. He clobbered a poor first serve share of 40 per cent as compared to his opponent’s 68 per cent but magnificently marked 13 out of 17 points on it. The veteran
also sought nine break chances and fired five aces to pocket the match.
Gimeno-Traver will face off his seventh seeded compatriot, Javier Marti, who battled past Gerard Granollers in three sets to secure this spot.
The fifth seed, Inigo Cervantes, crushed Japan’s Taro Daniel with a bagel to accompany the Spaniard. He amazingly brushed off all four breakpoints he came across and capitalised on four out of five break chances to formulate a 6-0, 6-3 score line in one
hour and six minutes. The Spaniard also hammered nine aces and amazingly clinched 27 out of 32 points on it.
