Daniel Gimeno-Traver ousts Sergio Gutierrez- Ferrol in semi-finals – Madrid Challenger 2012 CH
Fourth seeded, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, gleefully made it to the final of the Madrid Challenger 2012 held at the courts of Spain. He rallied past his compatriot, Sergio Gutierrez- Ferrol, giving a straight-sets
defeat, 7-5, 6-1, on Saturday. The Spanish duo faced each other for the first time and Traver jolted down the victory in nearly one hour and 22 minutes.
The opener proved to be a tough challenger for the Spaniards as they battle hard to dominate one another. The 27-year-old, Traver, held his initial serve and took hold of the opportunity to secure the lead in
the game. However, Ferrol gave his rival a tough competition and squared the score line after every alternate game. Both the players sustained their serves throughout the initial set, displaying excellent defence mechanism. As the game progressed, Traver nudged
forward to pocket the last two game without facing any hindrance and closed the set with a 7-5 lead.
Surprisingly, the Spanish participants manifested exactly similar first serve accuracy of 54 percent. However, the Spanish senior double faulted four times at the critical moments in the match, giving his rival
an opportunity to square down the score line. Traver converted 19 of 22 first but just eight of 19 second deliveries. From the four break points bestowed upon, he was only able to capitalize on just one. Ferrol followed the lead with 15 of 21 first and eight
of 18 second serve points.
In the subsequent set the 23-year-old, Ferrol completely lost his passion, as he was unable to withstand his rival’s brutality. The world number 74, Traver, exhibited a smart move and broke his opponent’s serve
to clinch the initial three games, stamping a 3-love lead. Ferrol remained completely dormant and merely secured a single point in the middle of the set. Traver advanced with a strong resolve to win and cashed Ferrol’s serve in the sixth game, successively
terminated the set with his 6-1 win.
For the final match of the ATP Challenger the local challenger will contest against the German, Jan-Lennard Stuff.
