Daniel Gimeno-Traver overcomes Peter Torebko in the quarter-finals – Alphen Challenger 2012
World number 96, Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain, survived the second set scare to down the 199th ranked player from Germany, Peter Torebko, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 at the last-eight stage of the TEAN International Tennis Tournament
in Alphen, Holland on Friday.
Gimeno-Traver made a breakthrough in the opening game of the contest and held his next serve to grab a 2-0 lead. The Spaniard maintained his lead till the end, closing the first set 6-4.
The right-hander hit a single ace and did not commit any double fault, hitting 83 percent of the first serves. The 27-year-old had an incredible conversion rate, clinching 17 of the 19 first and three of the four second delivery
points. On the other hand, Torebko was himself to blame for his loss, as he made three horrible double faults and kept his first serve percentage at merely 29. The German player could not save one of the two break points he faced and did not receive any of
his own in the opener.
Start of second set was stable, as Gimeno-Traver and Torebko did not drop their serve in the first seven games to take the score to 4-3 in favour of the German. Torebko struck in the eight to move ahead 5-3 but he could not consolidated
on that, seeing his lead getting cut to 4-5. The German, however, managed to hit another blow to the Spaniard in the next game to win 6-4.
Torebko’s serve statistics were poor, as he failed to fire any ace and made three pathetic double faults in the second set. The German fared satisfactorily in other aspects, as he kept his first serve percentage at 64 and sealed
12 of the 18 points on them.
In a similar fashion to the opener, Gimeno-Traver stung a break in the first game and won his following serve to go up 2-0. Though, Torebko was not willing to go down without a fight, as he fought back to even it out at 4-4. The
Spaniard struck again in the ninth but he failed to serve out the match in the following game, taking the proceedings to 5-5. Gimeno-Traver grabbed decisive breakthrough in the 11th and capitalised on it to triumph 7-5.
It took Spanish contestant two hours and 14 minutes to throw his rival out of the tournament.
Gimeno-Traver will meet another German contender, Simon Greul, in the semi-finals. Greul defeated Ivan Navarro at the last-eight stage.
