Daniel Gimeno-Traver prevails over Dominik Meffert in the round one – Marbella Challenger 2012 CH
Top seeded, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, successfully moved into the second round of the Marbella Challenger 2012 held at the red clay courts of Spain. He gave a straight-sets defeat, 6-1, 6-4 to the German veteran, Dominik Meffert, on
Tuesday.
The local challenger summed up his victory in one hour and five minutes. The German defeated Traver in the second round in three sets 7-6(5), 1-6, 6-2 in the Siemens Open held at the red clay courts of Netherlands in the year 2007.
Ranked 73rd in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Traver, commenced the match at a positive note and confidently held his initial serve. He sustained his pace and
cashed his challengers serve in the fourth game, marking a 3-1 lead. The German professional was unable to put forward a good show as he failed to capitalize on even a single point. Traver bagged away all the games successively, dusting away his rival every
time he jumped forward. Eventually, he busted his serve in the seventh game, concluding the set with a breadstick.
In the second set, the 31-year-old German contender was unable to retain his initial serve, giving the Spaniard a chance to take control. Traver beautifully grabbed the initial two games, marking a 2-love lead. However, both players
held their serves for the remainder part of the match, giving each other a tough time. Meffert gave his challenger a tough competition but he was not completely self-assured and was unable to convert many opportunities presented to him. The Spanish unleashed
his true colours and skilfully reeled off all the remaining games, pulling out of the set with a 6-4 win.
The 27-year-old, Traver, manifested 74 percent initial serve accuracy against his competitor. He converted 23 of 28 first but just three of 10 second delivery points. On the other hand, Meffert secured 61 percent initial serve
with 14 of 20 first and six of 13 second serve points. He was gifted five break opportunities but he was unable to attain even one and Traver secured even the single chance presented.
