Daniel Gimeno-Traver takes down Louk Sorensen in second round – San Sebastian Challenger 2011
Daniel Gimeno-Traver of Spain made a terrific comeback in his second round match to overcome the Irish tennis pro Louk Sorensen 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 and advance into the third round of 2011 San Sebastian Challengers on Tuesday here in
Spain.
Seeded third at the ATP Challenger event, Gimeno-Traver showed shear temperament and class in match that lasted for nearly 2 hours and 37 minutes on the red clay courts of San Sebastian. He will be feeling very confident about
the way he conducted himself on the court. However to achieve similar results in the upcoming matches for him at the tournament, he must control the unforced errors and seek consistency.
Sorenson had a great start to the contest. Looking to gain momentum in the match, he executed his game plan with great confidence. Despite suffering a serve break twice in the opening set, he was able to bounce back each time to
stay in the set. Breaking his opponent three times in the opener, he took a vital 5-4 lead, serving for the set. The Irish tennis pro finally held on to his service game comfortably to take the 1-0 lead in the set score.
Some highly competitive tennis was seen in the second set as well as the contestants raised their game to a different level. Sorensen looked to close out the match in straight sets as he fought like a warrior for every available
point. Gimeno-Traver also up his game play and he dented his opponent’s confidence levels with his ferocious forehand and backhand winners down the line and cross court.
A series of serve breaks were exchanged by the two players as the match entered a crucial stage. Ranked 94th in the Association of Tennis Professional’s rankings, Gimeno-Traver displayed unbelievable fighting spirit
to force the match into the decider. Breaking his opponent for the third time, the 26-year-old bagged the set as he evened the set score 1-1.
With the momentum on his side, Gimeno-Traver continued to play his natural game freely. Breaking his opponent early in the final set, he took a vital 4-2 lead as he looked to close out the match. Sorensen broke straight back to
level the game score 4-4. However, Gimeno-Traver converted his second break chance of the set at tricky 6-5 game score to seal a memorable victory.
Although Traver came out on top at the end of the match, nothing can be taken away from Sorensen for the effort he put in. Giving a very tough time to an opponent ranked much higher than himself, Sorenson will feel more confident
about his abilities.
